Subject: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
 
Soon, I will introduce a resolution to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and recognizing the employees who continue to deliver high quality health care to residents in the Central Pennsylvania region.
 
In 1963, Samuel L. Hinkle, president and chairman of the Hershey Chocolate Corporation, contacted Penn State University president, Dr. Eric E. Walker to establish a medical school and teaching hospital in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The subsequent $50 million gift to The Pennsylvania State University, along with a federal grant from the U.S. Public Health Service, resulted in the construction of Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine. In the late 1960’s, Penn State College of Medicine opened its doors awarding its first degrees in 1969 and graduating its first full class in 1971.
 
The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center accepted its first patient shortly thereafter on October 14, 1970. Since its inception, Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has been a pioneer in health care delivery, clinical innovation, and medical research. As a nationally recognized academic medical center, Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center holds the highest trauma level accreditation for both adult and pediatric patients, serving more than 1.2 million people at its 564 bed facility and employing more than 11,000 people including 1,100 physicians and providers and 2,288 nurses. Moreover, the Hershey campus is home to Penn State Children’s Hospital, along with institutes focused on cancer, heart and vascular disease, and the neurosciences, and the Penn State College of Medicine.
