MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 14, 2020 05:06 PM
From: Senator Lawrence M. Farnese, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: Waiving driver's license fees for homeless youth.

The House and Senate recently recognized “Education for Youth Experiencing Homelessness Week” to bring awareness to the plight of hundreds of thousands of homeless children across the commonwealth and help keep them connected to their schools and communities while their lives stabilize.

Please join me in taking the next step to protect these vulnerable children by lifting the fees for obtaining a driver’s license or identification card to help these children enroll or transfer schools, get access to food and housing assistance, and attend doctors’ visits.

This legislation will waive the fees for youth identified as homeless by a state agency and permit these children to use a shelter or school address as a temporary address, however, the child must be enrolled in an education program to receive the waived fee.

Please support removing this barrier to services for homeless youth. Thank you.

Introduced as SB1295
