Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 12, 2019 04:17 PM
From: Senator Doug Mastriano
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution declaring November as Cold War Victory Month

In the near future, I intend to introduce a unanimous consent resolution marking November 2019 as Cold War Victory Month in Pennsylvania, and I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor.

The month of November 2019 marks the 30-year anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain and the end of the Cold War.

Tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians served along the front lines of freedom to safeguard the free world during the Cold War. My unanimous consent resolution will recognize their sacrifice.

The beginning of the end of the Cold War commenced in November of 1989. Historically, the Cold War stemmed from the heels of World War II, where a Moscow-led Soviet Empire threatened Europe with a Third World War.

The United States of America averted this threat to world peace by maintaining a robust military presence in Western Europe.

This commitment included the stationing & deployment of millions of our great men and women in Europe from 1947-1990, and provided Europe with the longest epoch of peace in its history.

American men and women in uniform deterred Soviet aggression and paved the way for Europe to enjoy unsurpassed prosperity.

Additionally, our nation's dedication to the cause of freedom not only preserved representative government, but literally saved the lives of countless millions.

This commitment and dedication to our European Allies is personified by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which continues - - - under the leadership of the United States - - - to provide assurance and deterrence to our friends across Europe.

The goal of my resolution is to bring more attention to this important moment and recognize November 2019 as "Cold War Victory Month" in Pennsylvania.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. If you have any questions, please contact Scot Pitzer in my office at 717-787-4651.
