Subject: | “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania (October 2019) |
I plan to introduce a resolution designating October 2019 as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. This resolution encourages all Pennsylvanians to learn more about how to recognize and prevent domestic violence and how to support victims and survivors. Data reports show that on average, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner, more than 10 million women and men over the course of a year. In 2018, 122 victims died from domestic violence incidents statewide and more than 1600 people have died from domestic violence related events in Pennsylvania over the past 10 years. For over forty years, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s nearly 60 community-based domestic violence programs have been providing free and confidential services to nearly 90,000 victims and their children each year; providing shelter, legal assistance, counseling and children’s services while helping them find safety, obtain justice and rebuild their lives free of abuse. Their mission to end domestic violence is a goal we all share as we continue upon our efforts to eliminate such staggering statistics in the Commonwealth. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
