MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 5, 2019 02:31 PM
From: Senator Doug Mastriano
To: All Senate members
Subject: Tax Relief for Aging Pennsylvanians

In the near future, I intend to introduce the following legislation, and I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor:

Tax Relief for Aging Pennsylvanians.

This legislation would eliminate property taxes imposed by a political subdivision on residents that:
  • are age 65 or older, and
  • are a resident of Pennsylvania for ten years or more, and
  • have an annual household income of $40,000 or less.
According to the Pennsylvania State Data Center, PA ranks fifth among the 50 states with its population age 65-plus (2.2 million) and seventh by percentage (17.8 percent).

Those numbers continue to rise.

The state’s senior citizens are living on fixed incomes, and many have their mortgages paid off. However, property taxes continue to rise. Seniors throughout the 33rd District have told me they have to work a part-time job just to afford skyrocketing property taxes.

Our senior citizens worked their entire lives and should be able to enjoy their golden years, without the fear of losing their homes.

Overall, my legislation aims to eliminate property taxes for senior citizens on fixed incomes, who have already contributed to the Commonwealth’s tax base for several decades.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. Please contact Scot Pitzer at my office with any questions at 717-787-4651.
