MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 27, 2019 01:08 PM
From: Senator Wayne Langerholc, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: Broadband Accessibility Funding Program

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation that will dedicate state funding to address unserved rural areas of the Commonwealth.

Representing an area the majority of which is rural, I see firsthand how many of my constituents do not have access to reliable high-speed internet. Providing dedicated state funding will help all those in rural areas by:
  1. Establishing a grant program to extend deployment of facilities already providing broadband service;
  2. Limiting funding to entities who have demonstrated the ability to construct and administer;
  3. Requiring it to be used in unserved areas only; and
  4. Necessitating 20-percent of project costs come from their own funds.
Providing dedicated state funding with clear objectives is a step in the right direction. Reliable high-speed internet affords access to more educational opportunities and more high paying jobs.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.

Introduced as SB835
