Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 13, 2019 09:29 AM
From: Senator Patrick M. Browne
To: All Senate members
Subject: Designation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Purple Heart State and recognizing August 7th as Purple Heart Day in Pennsylvania

I will be introducing two pieces of legislation to designate the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Purple Heart state and recognizing August 7th as Purple Heart Day in Pennsylvania.

The first piece of legislation is a Resolution which will designate the Commonwealth as a Purple Heart State and recognize August 7th as Purple Heart Day in Pennsylvania. Because resolutions are only effective for the session in which they are adopted, this designation would expire at the end of the 2019-20 session. A similar Resolution was adopted by the Senate last year as Senate Resolution 394. Cosponsors of Senate Resolution 394 included: Senators Costa, Baker, Hughes, Martin, Bartolotta, Dinniman, and Fontana.

The second piece of legislation is an act that would make the designation of the Commonwealth as a Purple Heart State and recognizing August 7th as Purple Heart Day in Pennsylvania permanent.

At least fourteen states across the United States have honored their combat wounded and killed military veterans by proclaiming their states to be Purple Heart states. The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, chartered by an act of Congress, is to foster an environment of goodwill among combat wounded veterans and their families, to promote patriotism, to support legislative initiatives and, most importantly, to ensure that we never forget the sacrifices of veterans killed in action and wounded in combat.
In addition, the Purple Heart Trail was established in 1992, by the Military Order of the Purple Heart to be a symbolic trail throughout all 50 states to commemorate and honor all men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In Pennsylvania, the towns of Water Street to Lewisburg on Route 45, have been designated as part of the Purple Heart Trail.

Please join me in co-sponsoring both the resolution designating the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Purple Heart state and recognizing August 7th as Purple Heart Day in Pennsylvania, and the act that would make the designations permanent.
