Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 22, 2019 11:26 AM
From: Senator Michele Brooks
To: All Senate members
Subject: Police and Firefighter Blood Type ID Badges

In the near future, I plan on reintroducing legislation very similar to Senate Bill 509 from last session, previously sponsored by Senator Reschenthaler. This legislation would allow firefighters and police officers to wear an identification badge on their uniform that shows their blood type.

Similar in principle to the “dog tags” that members of the military wear, which contain, among other information, the service member’s name and blood type, these badges would be used to quickly identify the blood type of a firefighter or police officer in need of medical treatment. Accurate and timely identification of their blood type could make the difference between life and death in an emergency situation for these police officers and firefighters.

The original legislation was previously cosponsored by Senators Aument, Bartolotta, Boscola, Browne, Gordner, Greenleaf, Killion, Rafferty, Tartaglione, and Vulakovich.

I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation. This legislation will take an important step in further supporting and protecting our firefighters and police officers, who already do so much to protect our communities. Please do not hesitate to contact my office with any questions.
