Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 5, 2018 02:42 PM
From: Senator Patrick M. Browne
To: All Senate members
Subject: Fire Equipment Distributor Certification

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation similar to a bill introduced by Senator Vulakovich last session as Senate Bill 1178, which would establish a statewide licensure of Pennsylvania’s fire protection industry.

This legislation would also require the State Fire Commissioner’s office to maintain a list of state certified and licensed fire equipment technicians on its website so individuals, families and business owners can be assured the technician testing, installing or replacing their fire equipment is properly licensed in Pennsylvania.

There have been documented cases of individuals or businesses improperly testing equipment or not testing it at all. In some instances, stickers are just placed on fire equipment certifying that said equipment has been tested or replaced. The safety of our citizens and their property is too important not to ensure that fire equipment, if needed during an emergency, will work as intended because it has been correctly installed and tested. This legislation is similar to license requirements for fire equipment technicians in other states.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation that will ensure Pennsylvanians’ residents and businesses have properly installed and tested fire equipment by licensed Pennsylvania individuals and businesses.

Cosponsors of Senate Bill 1178 of last session included Senators Costa, Blake, Killion, Tartaglione and Stefano.
