|Subject:||Resolution - Task Force on Global Education|
|We plan to introduce a resolution that would establish a Task Force on Global Education. The task force would analyze global education in our K-12 schools and our colleges and universities, and would collaborate to make recommendations to ensure our Pennsylvania students are global ready graduates who will be competitive in the global economy.
The resolution will create a Task Force on Global Education that will be made up of a wide range of key education and business representatives. The task force would meet throughout an eighteen-month span researching, reviewing, holding public hearings and meeting with experts to:
• refine Pennsylvania’s definition of global competence
• develop guidelines and global competence goals
• consider a global competence endorsement for students as measured by a series of experiences---not another assessment
• identify best practices already occurring in our schools
• recommend ways best practice educational programs can be replicated and
• recommend workforce development practices to ensure our Pennsylvania students K-20 become economically competitive global ready graduates.
International businesses provide thousands of jobs here in Pennsylvania. In 2015-16, more than 48,450 international students studied here, contributed to, and had a significant impact on our Pennsylvania economy. Those students contributed approximately $1.7 billion annually to our Pennsylvania economy.
With approximately 1,658,100 jobs in Pennsylvania tied to trade in over 210 countries and territories, 6,400 foreign owned businesses employing more than 287,500 people in Pennsylvania (1 in 5 Pennsylvania jobs), and a 120 percent increase in jobs tied to international trade from 1992-2016, Pennsylvania’s economic growth is contingent upon our ability to expand our opportunities within the global marketplace.
Greater cross-cultural knowledge is necessary for Pennsylvania to participate successfully in the global economy. Pennsylvania is a viable location for overseas companies and the job markets they create are expanding across the Commonwealth.
This resolution will help ensure that Pennsylvania graduates successfully respond to the rapidly changing economic climate.
