Subject: | Creating Dyslexia Intervention Professional Development Requirements |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would create requirements for certain teachers and specialists in order to better familiarize them with screening, intervention, accommodation, and use of technology for students with reading disabilities, including dyslexia. According to the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity, up to one in five individuals are affected by dyslexia, and it is the most common learning disability. By identifying dyslexia early in a student’s career, educators and schools are able to provide students with proper accommodations, such as longer testing times, in order for them to succeed academically. In addition, this legislation would move the definition of dyslexia within the Public School Code. Currently, the definition is contained within the pilot program but is only applicable to that article. This would help future efforts to assist students with dyslexia by creating a standard definition for the entirety of the Public School Code. Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
