Subject: | Extending the Dyslexia and Early Literary Intervention Pilot Program |
In 2014, Act 69 created the Dyslexia and Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program to define dyslexia and provide early intervention reading support for kindergarten through second grade students. Eight school districts from across Pennsylvania were selected to participate in the pilot. The pilot’s initial data is encouraging and has brought about the desire to extend this work and the pilot for these school districts for two years. The extension is designed to show how students who initially began the program in kindergarten will now perform on their 3rd grade PSSA tests. The results of the PSSA should provide more evidence of the pilot’s success at reading intervention and improvement. Please join me along with Representative Neilson in cosponsoring this legislation to extend the pilot program as we continue to work towards providing students with greater resources for dyslexia and early reading intervention. The initial pilot program was cosponsored by Senators Wiley, Folmer, Dinniman, Costa, Hughes, Williams, Tartaglione, Kasunic, Fontana, Boscola, Alloway, Browne, Greenleaf, McIlhinney, Vulakovich, Ward, Blake, Brewster, Farnese, Ferlo, Kitchen, Leach, Schwank, Smith, Solobay, Stack, Teplitz, Washington, Wozniak, Yudichak and Waugh. |
