Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 19, 2017 02:48 PM
From: Senator Wayne D. Fontana
To: All Senate members
Subject: Property Tax Rebate for Baby Boomers

Pennsylvania’s 65+ population has grown by 8.9 percent since the 2010 Census. Recently, the Pennsylvania Data Center projected this age group to make up nearly a quarter of the state’s total population by 2035 which calculates to 3.2 million residents. As this age group continues to climb, we must look for ways to support these residents who are often on a fixed income.

In the near future I plan to reintroduce legislation that would implement a property tax rebate for the baby boomer generation. To qualify for a rebate, an individual must be a Pennsylvania residents who is 66 years and older, whose income is $50,000 and under, and who has lived in their home for 10 years or more. My bill would establish 2016-17 as a “base year” for property tax rebates to begin and would be funded through Pennsylvania Lottery proceeds.

I hope you will consider joining me that supports our baby boomers by co sponsoring this important legislation.
