Subject: | Mandating GPS United be Placed in Commonwealth Owned Vehicles |
In the near future I will be reintroducing SB 864, legislation mandating GPS units be placed in all Commonwealth owned vehicles. For years the private sector has been putting GPS units in vehicles to achieve efficiencies, and monitor vehicles for abuse by the driver. The Department of General Services has made great strides in maintaining a right sized vehicle fleet and driving down costs related to vehicles. Logically, the next step to further ensure we continue fleet efficiency is to put GPS units in each vehicle. While there certainly is a cost to this, the savings we could realize should outweigh costs. Further, the GPS adds another layer of accountability as to where Commonwealth owned vehicles are being driven and to ensure they are being driven safely. SB 864 was cosponsored last session by Senators Vulakovich, Alloway, Costa, Eichelberger, Rafferty, Scavello, Smith, Stefano, Vogel, Wagner, and Ward.
