Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 22, 2015 10:55 AM
From: Senator Lisa M. Boscola
To: All Senate members
Subject: Women's Veterans Health Care Task Force

In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation to establish a task force on Women’s Veterans’ Health Care to address the needs of our growing female veteran population in the Commonwealth.

The task force will study the prominent issues facing women veterans, including post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma and alcohol and substance abuse. Its members will provide recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly in order to ensure that our returning veterans receive proper care following their dedicated military service to our country.

The task force will analyze the laws, procedures, practices and rules relating to the delivery of healthcare services for women veterans at the Federal and state levels, and hold public hearings to further examine the current state of affairs.

It will be comprised of 17 members, including 4 members of the House and Senate, 4 female veterans that reside in the Commonwealth, and professionals from provider communities with expertise in health care, mental health care, substance abuse, addiction treatment and military sexual trauma.

This legislation is intended to improve the delivery of health care services to our nearly 72,000 female veterans. Pennsylvania ranks as having the seventh-highest population of women veterans in the U.S., following Texas, California, Florida, Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina.

This concurrent resolution is part of the bipartisan House & Senate Women’s Health Caucus initiatives for the 2015-16 session. It was previously introduced as SR 262 of 2014 by Sen. Washington. I hope that you will join me as a co-sponsor.
