Subject: | Prevent alternative nicotine product sales to minors |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to prohibit the sale of alternative nicotine products and vapor products to minors. “Alternative nicotine products” include noncombustible products containing nicotine that can be chewed, absorbed, dissolved or ingested such as nicotine gum and patches. “Vapor products” include electronic cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes or similar products and vapor cartridges or other containers of nicotine in a solution. Alternative nicotine products and vapor products have gained in popularity over the last few years with sales of e-cigarettes estimated at over $2 billion in 2014. The percentage of middle and high school students who use electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, more than tripled from 2013 to 2014, according to data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Resulting in at least 42 states prohibiting sales of electronic cigarettes or vaping/alternative tobacco products to minors. My legislation amends Title 18 (Crimes and Offenses), section 6305 (relating to the sale of tobacco products) to prohibit the sale of alternative nicotine products and vapor products to minors. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes. Protecting our children should be a priority. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
