Subject: | Legislation – Lifeguards at State Beaches |
Last session, I introduced Senate Bill 1419 that would once again require certified lifeguards to be employed at all Pennsylvania state parks with public beaches. In the near future, I plan to re-introduce this important legislation. The safety of children and adults swimming at state park’s beaches needs to be a priority in Pennsylvania. Not only do lifeguards provide water safety and lifesaving services to beach patrons, but can also provide first aid and other forms of assistance to those in need. I helped write the Department of the Auditor General’s special report in 2008, which addressed the state’s elimination of lifeguards at lake beaches. We recommended that the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reconsider its decision and reinstitute the lifeguards, and I continue to believe that this should be done. Previous co-sponsors of SB 1419 included Senators Costa, Fontana, Hughes, Schwank, and Smith. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation that will help protect those who want to enjoy and feel safe while visiting the beaches of Pennsylvania. |
