Subject: | Co Sponsorship: Adult Mentored Hunting Program |
In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation that is aimed at encouraging adults in Pennsylvania to try hunting by participating in an adult mentored hunting program. Modeled after the youth program, the legislation would allow adults to hunt at a reduce rate for one season so they can decide whether it is a sport they wish to pursue. Although this would be implemented in regulation, conversations with the Game Commission indicate that such a program would allow them to track new hunters, receive a small amount of revenue to cover their costs, and allow new hunters to receive their hunter trapper education card. While a portion of those that take advantage of the program will find that hunting is for them, we believe that everyone participating will come away with a great appreciation for the outdoors and shooting sports. The number of hunters in our state has declined over the past 25 years and many sportsmen organization believe that there is an incredible need to increase recruitment and retention rates nationwide. This legislation was SB 502 during the 2011-12 session. Co-sponsors included Senators Stack, D. White, Wozniak, Eichelberger, Erickson, Vogel, Brubaker, Brewster, Kasunic, Rafferty, McIlhinney, Pippy, Boscola, Costa, Alloway and Ferlo. |
