Subject: | Veteran Priority for Public Housing |
In the near future, I will be introducing SB 1135, legislation that will amend the Public Housing Authorities Law to require local housing authorities to give preference to veterans and families of active duty military when leasing public housing. Under my plan, first preference will be given to homeless veterans, second to disabled veterans or families of disabled veterans, third to families of deceased veterans and servicemen, and fourth preference shall be given to other veterans or servicemen or their families. Many of our veterans face numerous challenges when transitioning from active duty to civilian life. One of those challenges should not be finding housing. As the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and many others have stated frequently… “The words HOMELESS and VETERAN should never be used together.” I believe this legislation will provide much needed assistance to veterans in need of housing for themselves and their families. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
