MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 20, 2013 02:41 PM
From: Senator Timothy J. Solobay
To: All Senate members
Subject: School safety

In the near future I plan to introduce legislation that will serve as a valuable component in addressing school safety and violence prevention. My legislation would place a security presence, an armed retired police officer, in all publicly funded schools.

State and municipal police officers are able to retire after 25 years of service. This enables them to retire at a relatively young age and because they already have their pension and healthcare benefits, that expense would not become a financial burden for the schools.

Their primary responsibility will be to screen visitors for weapons and detect threats before allowing entrance into the school office or directly into the school. The officers would be required to undergo a background check and also maintain proper certification. The experience they would bring to schools, not only in law enforcement, but in community relations as well, would qualify them as ideal candidates for such positions.

I thank you in advance for your interest in this legislation.
