Subject: | Landfills and waste hauling |
In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation safeguarding our local communities from issues associated with increased out-of-state trash being hauled to our existing landfills. These three bills together will do the following: |
Introduced as SB783
Description: | 1. Require DEP to conduct a community health risk study before approving permits to expand a municipal landfill. DEP would also be required to conduct no less than three public hearings before approving a landfill permit modification (expansion). |
|

Introduced as SB784
Description: | 2. Prohibit issuance of permits for siting new landfills or expanding existing landfills where voters have rejected the siting or expansion by referendum vote. |
|

Introduced as SB785
Description: | 3. Double the fines for trash-hauling vehicles that exceed the gross weight currently allowed under the Solid Waste Management Act. |
