MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Jessica Benham and Rep. Brandon J. Markosek
To: All House members
Subject: Purple Alert System

It is a terrifying experience when a vulnerable individual is reported missing, particularly if the individual has an intellectual disability that may leave them scared, confused, and unsure where to turn for help. This precarious situation is intensified without a proper alert system in place. In response to this issue, some states have adopted a purple alert system to help locate missing individuals with an intellectual disability. Furthermore, purple alerts can provide a standardized community notification to assist the public in searching for missing individuals.

For this reason, we will be introducing legislation that would establish a purple alert system in Pennsylvania. This system would assist in alerting the public and locating a missing person with an intellectual disability.

It is vital that a specialized system is in place for vulnerable, missing individuals to increase efficiency in searching for them and returning them home safely. Please join us in co-sponsoring this legislation to provide further protections to missing individuals with an intellectual disability.
