Subject: Social Work Licensure Compact Model Legislation

I plan to introduce legislation that would authorize our Commonwealth to join the Social Work Licensure Compact. It will allow social workers who have or are eligible for an active license in Pennsylvania, to apply for a multi-state license.

With increased workforce shortages and a greater need for access to mental health services across the Commonwealth, the Social Work Licensure Compact will allow Pennsylvania to provide social workers the mobility to serve clients across state lines and for the use of expanded tele-health technology. This will help address the workforce shortage, create greater employment opportunities for licensees and easier access to care for Pennsylvanians.

The Social Work Licensure Compact will eliminate barriers to practice and client care while ensuring public protection. The Compact will provide consumers greater access to social work services, improve continuity of care when clients are traveling or relocate, support relocating professional social workers seeking employment in Pennsylvania. This would include much needed support for our military spouses that are professional social workers, as well as military families seeking treatment from social workers.

The legislation will also create a data system of information about licensees including license status, investigative information, and adverse actions, to provide a level of protection for the public and consumers of social work services.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
