Subject: Updating Vision Screening Requirements in the Public School Code
 
Act 122 of 2020 amended the Public School Code to require vision screenings in schools, and authorized the Advisory Health Board to create regulations for which schools would follow. However, the Board has been unable to create regulations for vision screenings because they currently lack the capacity to do so.
 
I plan to introduce legislation which would fix this issue by changing the body with the power to institute regulations for vision screenings to the Department of Health, and would allow the Department of Health to put temporary regulations in place for two years while establishing regulations. This adjustment will update the law and give schools the guidance they need.
