Subject: | PASSHE Faculty Post-Tenure Review |
It’s important to know that the tenured professors at our PASSHE schools are continuing to do a good job. With no mechanism in place to identify or measure what a “good job” is for tenured faculty, a window is left open for potentially bad conduct and inadequate output. Annual reviews and work assessments are common in most other industries, to ensure that expectations are met and work roles are being done with excellence. This concept should be extended to our state-owned colleges. My Faculty Post-Tenure Review legislation would simply provide for work assessments for our tenured PASSHE professors every five years. These reviews would cover productivity, accomplishments, overall performance, recognition and compensation considerations, and potentially improvement plans and/or consequences for underperformance. In order to best educate our future generations and keep them learning in-state, it’s critical that we at least have a framework in place to challenge and encourage our PASSHE tenured professors to excel. This legislation seeks to achieve this. Please consider co-sponsoring this legislation, which I plan to introduce shortly. |
