Subject: Concealed Carry Permit Information on Driver's Licenses and Photo Identification

During routine traffic stops, drivers with a concealed carry permit are often in fear that their legally registered firearm is thought to be illegal by law enforcement. Law enforcement officers also deserve the added protection of knowing the difference between a law-abiding citizen with a legal gun, and those non-law-abiding citizens with an illegal gun. All this confusion does is put law enforcement officers, concealed carry permit owners, and bystanders at risk.

My legislation would provide permit holders the option to specify on a drivers license or photo identification card that they posses a concealed carry permit. This would help an officer to immediately identify individuals who may legally possess a firearm in a vehicle from those who don’t and avoid a potentially dangerous situation. Providing this option to drivers who posses a concealed carry permit would benefit law enforcement immeasurably.

It is time we protect our neighbors, friends, and family from danger every time they exit the house through this commonsense addition to driver’s licenses and identification cards. Something similar is being done right now in Pennsylvania with Organ Donor and Veteran identification, and it couldn’t be simpler to begin now with concealed carry permit information.

Routine traffic stops shouldn’t result in a firearm death because of this confusion. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation.
