Subject: | Pedestrianization Grant Program |
Pedestrianization efforts prioritize walkability by closing thoroughfares to vehicular traffic. Communities across the country did this during the COVID-19 pandemic by closing off streets for outdoor dining. Doing so helped to keep businesses afloat during the pandemic while fostering a greater sense of community and boosting cultural centers.[1] Unfortunately, not all businesses have access to the benefits of pedestrianization. The costs are high,[2] and supplies necessary for pedestrianization can be prohibitive. That is why I am introducing legislation to make pedestrianization more accessible. My bill creates a grant program that would award Pennsylvania municipalities up to $100,000 to help their businesses implement pedestrianization efforts. To qualify, municipalities would need to submit a plan and commit to providing a funding match. By making streets more walkable, municipalities can foster stronger social ties and thriving businesses. Please join me in investing in our local communities by signing on to this proposal. |
