Subject: | Designating the Commonwealth as a Hydrogen Hub |
Under the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, $1.2 trillion was allocated to strengthen transportation systems, expand access to broadband, and provide support for a variety of environmental initiatives and programs. Roughly $60 billion was allocated to provide for the development of alternative energy technology. Of that amount, $8 billion in funding will be provided over a period of five years for the establishment of four regional hubs that will be tasked with the research, development, and production of hydrogen. A provision of the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act states that two of the hubs should be located in regions of the United States with the greatest natural gas resources. As you may know, Pennsylvania is ranked as the second-largest producer of natural gas in the United States. Furthermore, since the Commonwealth has an industrial legacy and a workforce with the required technological expertise for energy development, production, transmission, and manufacturing, it would be an ideal location for the placement of a hydrogen hub. The establishment of a hydrogen hub in Pennsylvania would not only bring new jobs and stimulate the economy but would also position the Commonwealth to be a leader in the emerging new energy technology industry. For these reasons, we will be introducing a resolution urging the Biden Administration and the United States Congress to designate Pennsylvania as a hydrogen hub. Please join us in support of this important measure. |
