Subject: Property Tax Relief for Disabled Veterans

Currently, an honorably discharged disabled veteran must be 100 percent disabled and have a financial need to receive a 100 percent exemption from property taxes.  Many of our disabled veterans who are not 100 percent disabled struggle to pay property taxes each year to have a place to call home.  In relation, approximately 121,746 Pennsylvania veterans live in homes with one or more major problems of quality, crowding, or cost, and an estimated 977 are homeless.

An amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution to provide property tax relief to more disabled veterans would enable many of them to keep their homes.  The amount of the tax exemption I am proposing would depend on the extent of a veteran’s disability, as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  Veterans who are 50 percent disabled or greater would qualify for an exemption proportionate to their percentage of disability.  The exemption would continue to be based on financial need.

Please join me in support of this effort to provide much-needed relief to additional veterans who suffered a disability as a result of their service to our nation.
