Subject: Chemical Disclosure
 
In June 2020, the 43rd Statewide Grand Jury implored Pennsylvania to “stop the chemical cover-up.” They found Pennsylvania failed to protect Pennsylvanians from the risk of natural gas operations. We could not agree more with the grand jurors. We hope you agree too and will join this fight to give our constituents the knowledge they need to protect themselves.
Pennsylvanians deserve to know what chemicals are used in the fracking process to be able to make decisions to protect their health and safety. Pennsylvanians who live near drilling sites have suffered severe health consequences from contaminated water.  Every day, trucks drive through our communities with hundreds or even thousands of gallons of fracking fluid. Hundreds or thousands of gallons of potentially dangerous chemicals are transported through our school zones, past our hospitals and near our water supplies.
What exactly is in our drinking water?  Only the big gas companies know, and they refuse to tell the people. We deserve to know. It is time we know.
Based on the Grand Jury recommendation “requiring fracking companies to publicly disclose all chemicals used in drilling and hydraulic fracturing before they are used on-site.” We are introducing a bill to put the health and safety of Pennsylvanians first by requiring natural gas companies to disclose what chemicals are used in the fracking process.  Our bill will amend the Oil and Gas Act to do the following:
  1. Remove the current exceptions to disclosure that allow companies to hide the chemicals they use in the fracking process; and
  2. Require disclosure of chemicals 14 days prior to use at any stage of the fracking process, including drilling.
Our legislation provides the transparency and accountability we all deserve on an issue with such serious public health consequences.
It is not too much to ask that Pennsylvanians know what chemicals are being pumped into our ground and carried through our neighborhoods. Please join us in the fight.
