Subject: Realty Transfer Tax Exemption for First Responders’ Surviving Family

It can be an overwhelmingly difficult process to cope with the sudden death of a family member. When it comes to first responders and their families in Pennsylvania, this is the risk and, in extremely tragic situations, the sacrifice that they heroically deal with. First responders selflessly serve and protect our communities, and their families deserve some relief if a tragedy occurs. As members of the General Assembly, we have the power to make the process of healing from loss for these families easier by removing tax obligations for real estate transfers.

We must do everything we can to help families of fallen first responders as they move forward without their loved ones. That is why I am introducing legislation to exempt surviving spouses and minor children of first responders who died in the line of duty from the Pennsylvania Realty Transfer Tax. This legislation will honor the sacrifice of our brave first responders and provide their families with the space to heal without the burden of tax liabilities when it comes to settling property transfers.

As a former law enforcement officer, I know the impact that this legislation could have for families coping with an unimaginable loss. I hope you will join me in supporting this very important legislation to honor first responders across Pennsylvania and let their families know that we have their backs.

Introduced as HB1406
