MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 6, 2023 11:13 AM
From: Representative Darisha K. Parker
To: All House members
Subject: Social Media Platforms and Gun Violence

No longer simply a way of communicating with family and friends, social media platforms have proven to be powerful tools with real world consequences. Individuals looking to cause violence are using these platforms to harm innocent Pennsylvanians. Philadelphia has been especially impacted by the trend of posting inciteful comments, taunting others to act out forcefully. With statistics reflecting an epidemic of violence involving firearms in Philadelphia, it behooves us to understand how social media falls into the equation.

My resolution directs the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to study the relationship between the role of social media platforms and the current upward trend in gun violence affecting the Commonwealth. The study will generate a report with recommendations on staunching inciteful content, while exploring ways social media companies can remove this dangerous content.

Understanding technology’s role in propagating gun violence is paramount to saving lives and merits our support. I hope you will join me in supporting this crucial House resolution.
