Subject: Updating Regulations for Public Swimming and Bathing Places
Did you know that existing regulations for public swimming and bathing places in Pennsylvania have not been substantially updated since the 1970's?

As you can imagine, significant scientific and technological advances have occurred in this field over the last half century, as reflected in the relatively new United States Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC). The MAHC is a collaborative effort with public health, the aquatics sector, and academic partners from across the United States to develop a national guidance document to address the design, construction, operation, maintenance, policies, and management of public aquatic facilities. The MAHC is updated every three years based upon recommendations made by the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code.

My legislation would require the Pennsylvania Department of Health to periodically update the public swimming and bathing area regulations to be consistent with the MAHC. Passage of this legislation would ensure the update of the Commonwealth's archaic regulations relative to public swimming and bathing places, while also providing a reputable standard of which these regulations can be periodically compared to and revised.

Please join me in bringing the standards for Pennsylvania's public pools and baths into the 21st century.

Introduced as HB1565
