MEMORANDUM

Subject: Increasing Access to Advanced Placement Courses

Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide enormous benefits to students who want to get a jump start on earning college credit. However, many high schools in Pennsylvania currently do not offer advanced coursework in any of the five core academic areas.

As such, I will introduce legislation intended to promote access to AP courses in our public high schools. This legislation will provide school districts the opportunity to apply for funds that will train a teacher in an AP course in one of the five core academic areas of Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Computer Science. The coursework will be focused on areas not offered by the school district. To be eligible for funding, a school district must commit to providing AP courses in the subject area that the teacher is trained in for at least three years.

This legislation will increase the academic rigor in our schools while improving the quality of instruction by teachers who will be teaching both regular and Advanced Placement courses. Please help improve access to high-quality education by co-sponsoring this measure.
