Subject: | Vehicle Registration Fee Waiver for Volunteer First Responders |
Since the 1970s, the number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania has gone from around 300,000 to about 38,000, with no reversal of that trend in sight. Volunteer first responders face a great deal of challenges in Pennsylvania and the demands of these challenges require lawmakers to take every step in ensuring we do all we can to not only help these volunteer meet the challenges, but encourage future generations to follow their example. Throughout our state, many of our volunteer first responders use their personal vehicles when responding to emergencies. These volunteers provide vital services for all of us, but they often incur personal costs while doing so - including putting miles on their vehicles, paying for gas and car insurance premiums, and more. That is why I will be re-introducing legislation that will waive the vehicle registration fee for active volunteer first responders who drive their own vehicles when responding to emergencies, instead paying a lower $10 processing fee. This legislation was passed unanimously by the House Transportation Committee last session in September 2022 and was supported by the Firefighters Association of Pennsylvania and the Ambulance Association of Pennsylvania. I ask that you please consider co-sponsoring this legislation and support our current and future volunteer first responders. Prior Co-Sponsors (HB 804): CIRESI, HENNESSEY, HOHENSTEIN, A.
