Subject: | Animal-Drawn Carriages |
In February 2020, a horse named Aisha was being used to pull carriages for a tourism business when she collapsed in Central Park, New York City. Unfortunately, Aisha was euthanized after responders were unable to save her. Aisha’s death highlighted the mistreatment and abuse that is often inflicted on animals used in the carriage business. Far too often, these vulnerable animals are required to perform physically strenuous work for long hours regardless of the weather. To address this important issue, I plan to introduce legislation that would help to protect these animals by prohibiting the use of animal-drawn carriages in the course of business or for monetary gain in cities with a population of 100,000 or more. I believe we have a responsibility to provide for the humane treatment of animals and hope that you will join me in support of this important legislation. |
