Subject: | Prohibiting Circumvention in Eviction Proceedings |
Often leases or rental agreements will require tenants to waive their rights to a written notice prior to the start of eviction proceedings. In some cases, these clauses will circumvent the entire eviction process established by law. After signing these agreements, tenants may find themselves locked out of their homes or find themselves in a costly court battle. This unfair and unethical practice hurts renters and their families and needs to be stopped. For this reason, I will be introducing legislation that would prohibit clauses in leases and rental agreements that require tenants to waive their rights. Renters should not have to sign their rights away to a deceptive landlord just to find a home for their family. Therefore, it is essential that we protect renters and ensure that the documents they sign enable a fair deal. Please join me in co-sponsoring this effort to protect the rights of renters and provide some fairness in the renting process. |
