Subject: | Turnpike Reporting of Lost Toll Revenue |
As many of us know, the Pennsylvania Turnpike lost $104 million in uncollected tolls from June 2020 to May 2021. This lost revenue is unacceptable considering the regular toll increases that Turnpike users experience year after year. And to make matters worse, this was only discovered after the Associated Press filed a request under the Right-to-Know Law to obtain an internal report from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. The Legislature has an obligation to conduct oversight of state agencies. Therefore, I will be introducing legislation that will require the Turnpike Commission to submit an annual report to the General Assembly outlining revenues from collected tolls as well as missed revenue from uncollected tolls during the prior fiscal year. This annual report would be similar to what the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission already develops internally, and it would be shared with the majority and minority chairs of both the House and Senate Transportation Committees. This legislation will both increase transparency and ensure accountability of this vital system. Please join me in promoting responsible government oversight by supporting this legislation. |
