Subject: Providing Our Public Servants with Blood Donation Leave
The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted Pennsylvanians' lives in unpredictable ways. Currently, our nation is facing a blood shortage that poses a concerning risk to vital medical treatments and patient care. Compared to the beginning of the pandemic, the American Red Cross has experienced a 10% decline in the number of people donating blood due to the cancelation of blood drives and staffing limitations.
My legislation would provide employees under the jurisdiction of the Governor, General Assembly, judiciary, school districts, and educational institutions, with two hours of paid leave to donate blood. This leave could be used up to four times in one year, allowing covered employees adequate time to go to brick-and-mortar blood donation locations if their local blood drives continue to face cancelations.
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood or platelets for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Blood donation is a selfless act that saves the lives of mothers, neighbors, and friends. It is long past time that we raise awareness surrounding the dire need for blood donations while also enabling our state’s public servants to provide for their community and save lives. I urge my colleagues to join me in co-sponsoring this crucial legislation.
Those looking to donate blood should contact the American Red Cross or your local blood bank. Your donation could save a life.
