Subject: Increasing Political Advertisement Transparency

Our democracy functions best when individual citizens know who is attempting to sway their opinions and influence their votes. Unfortunately, there are commonsense layers of transparency that Pennsylvania law currently lacks, many of which are already required for federal level elections. To combat this, we are introducing legislation expanding the disclaimer requirements for political advertisements.

Specifically, our legislation will require political action committees and outside special interests to clearly state who is paying for the advertisements they run and to disclose whether their advertisements are authorized by a specific candidate. In addition, our bill requires candidates to include an audio disclaimer on television and radio advertisements that they choose to endorse.

Federal law already requires these basic reforms. Please join us in supporting this necessary legislation and help to shed light on the political advertisements that seek to sway our elections.
