Subject: | Requiring that Insurers Cover Continuous Glucose Monitors |
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) save lives. These devices automatically track blood sugar levels throughout the day and night. This allows an individual suffering from diabetes to see their glucose level anytime without the use of a fingerstick. In addition to increased convenience, studies have shown CGMs to be among the best options for reducing A1C and for decreasing a patient’s time spent in hypoglycemia. Unfortunately, there is no requirement that a health insurer provide coverage for these devices. Existing state law already requires that insurers cover blood glucose monitors, but it does not specify that this must include coverage for CGMs. I am introducing legislation to remedy this issue. My bill will require that health insurers provide coverage for CGMs. I ask that you co-sponsor this necessary legislation and help to provide lifesaving technology to individuals suffering from diabetes throughout our state. |
