MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 23, 2021 04:35 PM
From: Representative Joe Webster
To: All House members
Subject: All Hands on Deck

I plan to introduce a joint resolution to amend the State Constitution and allow government employees, when needed, to act as poll workers in the district in which they reside.  This will give election officials more options in filling poll worker positions.

Poll workers are truely heroes.  These community members ensure that polling places run efficiently and that our elections are conducted safely and securely.  Regrettably, election officials continue to find it difficult to locate enough poll workers to run our elections.  This is a statewide problem that was only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.  However, Our State Constitution currently prohibits government employees from serving as poll workers.

This is also a problem that may have a simple solution. This is a commonsense proposal that will allow the dedicated individuals we entrust with running our bureaucracy to help in facilitating our elections.  Please join me in co-sponsoring this effort.

Introduced as HB1269
