Subject: Fighting Maternal Morbidity and Mortality
 
Every year, tens of thousands of women suffer from severe, unexpected health complications during labor and delivery. These complications, which the C.D.C. defines as severe maternal morbidity, can result in long-term consequences and even death. Sadly, the rate of severe maternal morbidity has increased dramatically in recent years, jumping by nearly 200% from 1993 to 2014.
 
The first step in combatting maternal morbidity and mortality is proper data collection. Accurate and regular tracking is essential for comprehensive research on this complex medical issue. We need to understand this issue before we can improve maternal care and maternal health outcomes. That is why I am introducing legislation that adds “severe maternal morbidity” to the list of reportable events within the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
