Subject: | Notification to Residential Property Owners of Changes to Official FEMA Flood Plan Map |
As we have seen in areas across Pennsylvania, the danger of flooding is real and not just in high-risk areas. Our landscapes are constantly changing and thus flood plain statuses of properties may change, too. Municipalities receive notice of these changes, which are based on information received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Property owners have the right to be informed of these changes of which they may not be aware. With this in mind, I will be re-introducing legislation that would require municipalities to contact residents if their flood plain status has changed based on information received from FEMA. The required communication would include a written notice that a change in classification has occurred and as well as the contact information for the National Flood Insurance Program. In doing so this will provide constituents with further clarification and afford them an opportunity to properly prepare for potential floods. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to help Pennsylvanians take the necessary steps to further protect themselves and their property from flooding. |
