MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 1, 2021 11:00 AM
From: Representative Steven R. Malagari
To: All House members
Subject: REAL ID Discount for Seniors

Starting October 1, 2021, federal law will require all Americans to carry a REAL ID-compliant identification card to board commercial flights, enter a federal building, or enter a military base. As we continue the process of issuing these cards, many of us have heard concerns about cost.

If a resident of Pennsylvania wishes to apply for a REAL ID, they are required to pay a one-time REAL ID fee along with the renewal fee for a license or identification card, regardless of the expiration date on their current ID. The cost to obtain a REAL ID can be a burden for senior citizens living on a fixed income, and without a REAL ID, seniors will not be able to travel to another state by airplane to visit family and friends. Our senior citizens should be able to enjoy their retirement without the stress of added fees. This is why I am introducing a bill to eliminate the added costs associated with REAL ID for people 65 years of age and older.

Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest populations of senior citizens in the country. Reducing the cost of REAL ID for our seniors is the right thing to do. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
