Subject: | Expanding HEMAP to assist Landlords during the COVID-19 pandemic |
Families across Pennsylvania are struggling to pay rent and mortgages. Rent insecurity can lead to landlords facing difficult decisions and preventing landlords from making their mortgage payments. Even though landlords are not the residents of these properties, their loss of ownership could cause the families renting to lose their homes. In order to help some of our struggling landlords, I will be introducing legislation which would allow them to be eligible to apply for the Home Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP). Landlords would need to meet eligibility criteria similar to the current HEMAP requirements. In addition, the loans would be required to be paid back within 12 months of the end of the Governor’s Emergency Declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. I ask that you support this legislation and help landlords and families across Pennsylvania who are stressed during these uncertain times. Allowing rental properties to stay in the owner’s possession will help provide stability to renters across the Commonwealth and avoid furthering the housing crisis. |
