Subject: Protecting Public Utility Consumers from COVID-19 Rate Increases

Consumers, especially consumers of public utilities, should not be victims of corporate greed.

Public utilities across the country are trying to recover profits and shareholder dividends lost due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic by increasing the rates consumers pay for essential services. Consumers, however, should not be charged for revenue shortfalls or lost dividends.

Investments are all about risk – and public utility investors need to have some skin in the game and not line their pockets at the expense of ratepayers. That’s why I will be introducing legislation preventing utilities from hiking up rates to recover lost profits that are due to the COVID-19 pandemic or mitigation measures.

Please join me in supporting this critical piece of consumer protection legislation.

Introduced as HB517
