Subject: | Small Personal Care Homes |
Personal care homes are designed to provide safe, humane, comfortable and supportive residential settings for adults in exchange for payment where food, shelter and personal assistance or supervision are provided for a period exceeding 24 hours. Currently, only homes for four or more adults are regulated by the state. Unregulated smaller homes with three or fewer persons are being poorly run, resulting in negligence to those paying to stay there. My proposal would extend two provisions of current regulations to small personal care homes: the Department of Human Services will inspect such facilities at least once annually unannounced, and those responsible for the small personal care home will be required to submit to a criminal background check. All small personal care homes will be registered. Last session this was HB 606. These are commonsense steps designed to protect the health, safety and well-being of residents in homes with one to three residents. Please join me in support of this important legislation. |
