Subject: Nonprofit Campaign Donations Disclosure
Over the last decade, nonprofit organizations have assumed an active role in making financial contributions to candidates for political office. In some cases, the financial contributions made by nonprofits are either anonymous or given with minimal public disclosure because of loopholes in our campaign finance laws.
My proposal would require a nonprofit organization that has the expectation of making contributions or expenditures of $25,000 or more in a calendar year to a political committee or campaign to file a statement of organization with the Department of State. The nonprofit organization would also be required to file a report of the source of the 10 largest cumulative payments of $10,000 or more the nonprofit organization received in the current calendar year from a single person.
Our constituents have a right to know who contributes to campaigns in our state and our campaign finance rules need to be strong enough to deter corruption and promote public confidence in our elections.
