MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 9, 2020 01:22 PM
From: Representative Donna Bullock and Rep. Melissa L. Shusterman, Rep. Jennifer O'Mara
To: All House members
Subject: Equal Pay

Women remain at a disadvantage in the workplace. They accomplish the same tasks, perform the same jobs, yet are not compensated the same as their male counterparts. It is time we stand with women, demanding change and a solution to this long-standing problem. The time for economic justice is now.

My legislation will prohibit discriminatory gender-based pay, placing new penalties on employers using such discriminatory wage practices. It further creates the Equal Pay Commission to investigate and study factors causing pay disparity. We need to correct this economic injustice by allowing employees the ability to inquire about wages and requiring employers disclose information about wages.

Women now officially outnumber men in workplaces across the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Data released in December 2020 showed that women hold 50.04% of all available positions.

It’s time we move forward and ensure all Pennsylvania workers receive equal pay for equal work and eradicate wage disparity once and for all. I ask you to join me in co-sponsoring this legislation in support of equity for all women.
